From Giorgio Agamben’s postulates, mainly in everything related to homo sacer, we analyzed the instruments used by governmental power in Argentina between 1966 and 1983 to control people, especially children. We used association of geographic military zones and geographic distribution of the repressive facts, the family members of the young high school and college students, union workers and activists. We observed that the political and economic theology supported violence during that period.

THE INCLUSION OF WOMEN’S ISSUES IN PEACE NEGOTIATION AGREEMENTS: GUATEMALA, EL SALVADOR, AND COLOMBIA

Armed conflict and its consequences do not discriminate according to gender. It affects all people. During an armed conflict, women are the majority of civilian victims: they are forcibly displaced, their family members are killed, and they suffer sexual abuse and torture. However, most peace processes have been exclusively controlled and led by men, while women and women’s issues are usually not included in peace negotiations or resulting agreements. In the last 30 years, there have been 35 comprehensive peace accords signed across the world of which only eight included women’s issues in their agreements. It is crucial that women’s issues are included to engender institutions and policies focused on improving women’s status in society as well as to ensure a sustainable peace. This project tackles the important question, why are women’s issues included in some peace negotiations and peace agreements and not others. I study this process by analyzing the peace processes and agreements in three cases: Guatemala, El Salvador, and Colombia. I use secondary sources for Guatemala and El Salvador, and a mix of primary and secondary sources (30 interviews) for Colombia. I find that a mobilized women’s movement and frame alignment are necessary conditions for the inclusion of women’s issues in the peace agreement. These findings contribute to the scholarly literature on peace agreements and on women’s rights in conflict-affected areas and have implications for practitioners in the areas of conflict management and peacebuilding

The ties that bind - An exploratory study of social capital in peacebuilding initiatives in Guatemala

    Get PDF
This thesis investigates the relationship between social capital and peacebuilding, and the potential contribution peacebuilding efforts can make in terms of generating social capital in post-conflict countries. Using a qualitative methodological approach, seven local civil society organizations in Guatemala were interviewed with the purpose of understanding in what way the organizations are contributing to the generation of social capital. The material was examined through an analytical framework consisting of three social capital dimensions and seven peacebuilding functions in order to explore the activities of the organizations and what dimensions of social capital that is expressed in their activities. The study finds that the organizations are engaged in several peacebuilding functions and are focusing their work through these functions towards generating bridging and linking social capital in Guatemala

Aquaculture and rural livelihoods in the Bolivian Amazon - Systems of innovation and pro-poor technology development

    Get PDF
This thesis is about pro-poor agricultural innovations and smallholder development in Amazonia. The focus is on aquaculture in the Bolivian Amazon, with particular reference to indigenous territories. An Innovation Systems framework is used to analyse aquaculture Research and Development at a national level and its relevance to small farmers. The analysis of poverty-focused technology development at the project and farm levels is aided by a Knowledge Engineering Approach for agricultural research management and Livelihoods perspectives. The data comes from interviews with fish farmers and other actors, on-farm and on-station research and livelihoods surveys. Indigenous-species aquaculture can help integrate conservation and development efforts in the region. Nevertheless, a weak innovation system, with limited participation of the public sector, and underdeveloped markets greatly limit poorer farmers’ access to aquaculture technologies. Furthermore, low-external-input systems often promoted as ‘pro-poor’ have limited growth potential whilst requiring considerable skills and labour, both of which tend to be in short supply in Amazonia. Development and poverty reduction objectives might be best met by supporting small and medium-scale commercial aquaculture in areas with access to input/output markets, developing institutional innovations in the provision of inputs and credit and building producer associations for bulk marketing. Given limited resources, priority should be given to reinforce existing innovation networks, largely within the private sector. Indigenous farmers with access to markets can also benefit from aquaculture with a commercial approach. There is considerable evidence of farmers in indigenous territories diversifying their production to include more market-oriented farming, as well as activities in the non-farm sector and wage labour. Here, interest in and access to aquaculture is influenced by location (access to markets and environmental settings), income portfolio and type of livelihoods diversification. The research has important implications for rural aquaculture development in the Bolivian Amazon and provides relevant data about livelihoods and change in indigenous communities and their implications for Conservation and Development Projects in Amazoni
